Most sessions fall somewhere between $70 and $300, depending on the therapist's credentials, session length, and where you live. According to a 2024 fee survey by the Ontario Psychological Association, psychologists most commonly charge $250 per hour, and highly experienced psychologists can charge up to $400.

At Relationship Matters Therapy Centre, our fees and services range between $70 and $200 for a 60-minute session, consistent with community norms across Cambridge, Kitchener, and Waterloo. In this blog we will take a closer look at how much does therapy cost in Ontario, what affects the price, and how insurance and other programs can help cover it.

How Much Does Therapy Cost in Ontario? A Look at What Affects the Price

Session cost is not random. A few factors shape what a therapist charges, and understanding them can help you compare rates with confidence:

  • Session Length: Sessions typically run 60 to 90 minutes, and longer formats are priced accordingly.

  • Type of Therapy: Individual, couples, and family sessions are structured differently and are often billed at different rates.

  • Therapist Experience and Specialization: Clinicians with advanced training in a specific area, such as infidelity recovery or high-conflict co-parenting, often reflect that expertise in their fee.

  • Location: Practices in larger cities or downtown areas tend to carry higher overhead, which can be reflected in session rates.

  • Insurance Coverage: Whether a client has extended health benefits can affect which rate structure applies and what portion is reimbursed.

  • Out-of-Pocket Payments: Clients paying privately may have access to different pricing options, including sliding scale or reduced rates.

Is Therapy Covered Under Insurance in Ontario?

Often, yes. Ontario draws a clear line between public and private mental health coverage, and that line shapes what most people can access when trying to figure out whether insurance covers therapy in Ontario. OHIP pays for care delivered inside the medical system, including visits to a family doctor about a mental health concern, referrals to a psychiatrist, and hospital based or publicly funded programs.

As the Government of Ontario confirms, care delivered outside a hospital by a provider who is not a physician falls outside OHIP. Private psychotherapy, sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist (RP), Registered Marriage and Family Therapist (RMFT), psychologist, or Registered Social Worker (RSW) in private practice fall outside OHIP. For that type of support, you need private extended health coverage.

What Covers the Cost of Private Therapy?

Private psychotherapy sessions can be covered by the following:

  • Employee Assistance Programs (EAP): Funded entirely by an employer and separate from extended health benefits, an EAP typically offers a set number of free sessions per concern each year, usually between three and eight, at no cost to the employee. It resets annually and does not draw down your extended health maximum.

  • Extended Health Plans: Private health insurance plans available through an employer group plan or purchased individually, such as Manulife, Sun Life, GreenShield, Canada Life, and TELUS Health commonly include coverage for regulated mental health providers. Coverage works as a reimbursable insurance benefit with an annual maximum and per session limit, both of which depend entirely on the specific policy.

  • Medical Expense Tax Credit: A federal credit that lets Ontario residents claim eligible therapy expenses, including sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist, on their annual tax return.

  • Student Health Plans: Full-time students at institutions such as the University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University, the University of Guelph, and Conestoga College have health benefits included in their tuition, with annual maximums generally ranging from $300 to $800 and coverage of 70 to 80 percent per visit depending on the school. Confirming current details with your student association is the best way to know what applies to you.

An EAP and an extended health plan run independently, using one does not reduce what is available under the other, so it is worth asking HR whether both exist before assuming extended health is your only option.

At Relationship Matters Therapy Centre, sessions with a supervised Student Therapist are available at a reduced rate through our affordable therapy program. Every session is delivered by a master's level clinician under the direct clinical supervision of a seasoned Registered Psychotherapist. That structure means more than one set of clinical eyes supporting your care from the start, with current research and best practice built into the work throughout at a low cost therapy option.

Fees for the affordable therapy program are as follows:

  • Individual Therapy: $70 for a 60 minute session.

  • Couples and Family Therapy: $90 for a 60 minute session.

  • Sliding Scale: Additional reduced rate options are available on request.

Sessions are available both online and in person. To get started, book an appointment with our team for a free 15 minute consultation with our team. For clients moving forward with the affordable therapy program, this is followed by being matched with a Student Therapist and a free 60 minute session to talk about what is going on and whether the fit feels right. That conversation goes both ways, since the clinician is also confirming that your concern fits within their scope of practice before moving forward, which is central to choosing a counsellor who is genuinely the right fit.

As a marriage or relationship counselor in Cambridge, Relationship Matters Therapy Centre also supports clients in Kitchener, Waterloo, and virtually across Ontario.

How Much Does Therapy Cost in Ontario? FAQs

Does OHIP cover therapy in Ontario?

No, OHIP does not cover private psychotherapy. OHIP covers psychiatrists for diagnostic assessments and medication management, but talk therapy often requires accessing public mental health programs, where long waitlists, session limits, and limited therapist options can be barriers.

Does insurance cover couples or family therapy?

Coverage for couples and family therapy varies by plan. Some benefit plans & insurances include it under general mental health benefits, while others require an individual diagnosis on file before a claim can be processed. Confirming the details with your insurer before booking is the best way to avoid unexpected costs.

What Is the difference between a Psychotherapist, a Psychologist, and a Registered Social Worker?

Psychologists hold a doctoral degree and can diagnose and administer psychological testing. Registered Psychotherapists focus specifically on psychotherapy without diagnosis or testing, while Registered Social Workers provide psychotherapy through a broader lens that considers relationships, work, and community alongside individual experience.

Can I claim therapy on my taxes?

Yes. Sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist are commonly eligible under the federal Medical Expense Tax Credit. A tax professional can confirm how this applies to your specific situation.
