Accessible Mental Health Care Shouldn’t Be a Privilege

Quality mental health support should not depend on how much someone can afford to pay. Yet for many people, cost is exactly what stands between them and the help they need, and that gap can make an already difficult moment feel even more isolating.

At Relationship Matters Therapy Centre, our student therapists provide affordable virtual therapy Ontario residents can access from anywhere in the province, alongside in-person sessions at our Cambridge office for those in Cambridge, Kitchener, and Waterloo. Support should not be something a person has to earn their way into. It should be there when it is needed.

About Our Affordable Therapy Ontario Program

According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information, 15% of Canadians did not get mental health services they needed in the past 12 months because of cost, and among people who had already been diagnosed with a mental health condition, that number rose to 34%. CIHI also found that 2 in 5 Canadians felt their mental health was negatively affected by the economic downturn. For people looking for affordable therapy Cambridge support, or Ontario affordable therapy that feels like a good fit for them, affordability can shape whether therapy starts now or keeps getting pushed further away.

In our affordable therapy program, we support people through emotional distress, relationship struggles, and the harder seasons of life. You will be matched with a student therapist under the direct clinical supervision of a seasoned Registered Psychotherapist, ensuring that the expertise and best therapeutic practices are present in the work from the start. The work is warm, collaborative, and focused on the bigger picture, not just the symptom on the surface. That means therapy looks at the relationships, patterns, and life experiences. Care is tailored specifically to you rather than forcing you into a rigid model.

Before any commitment, you will meet your student therapist for a free 60-minute intake session. This gives you space to talk through what is going on, what kind of support you are looking for, and whether the fit feels right for you.

Our affordable therapy sessions are offered at a rate of $70/ 60- minute session for individuals and $90/session for couples & families, available both virtually for residents across Ontario and in person in our Cambridge office for nearby clients in Cambridge, Kitchener, or the Waterloo region.

Common Reasons Some People Seek Individual or Relational Therapy

  • Improving overall self-esteem and self-worth

  • Enhancing how someone communicates with others

  • Exploring and supporting gender and sexual identity

  • Improving connection in relationships

  • Improving coping skills, emotional regulation, and better stress management

  • Anger management

  • Navigating transitions into parenthood or other family configurations

  • Feelings of loss, grief, and bereavement

  • Navigating life transitions more effectively

  • Processing and healing from past trauma

  • Resolving painful conflict and working through gridlocked issues

  • Support in finding and creating healthy relationships

  • Recovering from addiction and compulsive behaviours

For some people, therapy is about finally making room for what has been weighing on them. For others, it is about understanding recurring patterns, finding steadier ground, and feeling less alone in what they are carrying. Support can also be more flexible than people expect. The Canadian Institute for Health Information reports that 11% of Canadians received virtual care from a mental health professional, showing that online support is already part of how many people access care in Canada. For clients looking for affordable online therapy in Ontario, that flexibility can make therapy easier to maintain when work, parenting, or emotional energy are taking enough of your time without a new commute to add on top of it all. Those wondering whether online support may be a good fit can read more about the advantages of virtual therapy.

The Canadian Institute for Health Information notes that among people who did not receive mental health services because of cost, 60% still reported having a private insurance plan. CIHI also explains that coverage limits, co-payments, deductibles, medication costs, and the ability to take time away from work can still stand in the way.

Does Insurance Cover This?

Coverage depends entirely on your specific plan. OHIP does not cover private psychotherapy, so most people rely on other sources, including employer extended health plans through insurers like Manulife, Sun Life, GreenShield, Canada Life, or TELUS Health, an Employee Assistance Program through their workplace, or the federal Medical Expense Tax Credit. An Employee Assistance Program runs separately from extended health benefits and often includes a set number of free sessions per concern each year, so it is worth checking with your employer even if you assume your only option is your regular benefits plan.

Full-time students may also have coverage included in their tuition. For example, University of Waterloo students are covered up to $800 per year at 80 percent per visit for undergraduates, or $400 per year for graduate students, with no referral required. Wilfrid Laurier, University of Guelph, and Conestoga College offer similar benefits. It is worth checking with your student association or insurance provider to confirm current details.
